They often have to live through the suppression and containment that are deployed by their family, because of their lack of traditional cultural values. While ideally considered as a ‘nurturing’ space to its children, family often polices one’s true identity, causing nurture to slip into a kind of abuse in the name of their ‘love’. In ‘In the name of love : 사랑이란 이름으로’,&nbsp; Son explores the understanding of ‘love’ when an individual fails to perform their national identity given at birth. Using resin, bath scrub towels, video and cellophane, Son creates a shrine-like space, where one’s memories and experience have accumulated since childhood. In this space, Son explores the act of scratching and scrubbing as a form of meditation to rethink and construct one’s identity, as well as a removal of trauma and displacement of familial love. Through this repetitive labour, Son investigates the uniformity that families, the nurturing platforms, may enforce onto individuals, and the transitional line that lies between nurture and abuse. Through the lens of cultural hybridity, Son invites viewers to explore the unsettled senses of belonging in the name of (their) love. Deeply rooted in Confucianism, Korean families practiced oppression on females including widow suicide, concubinage, and abortion of female-child pregnancy. The oppression still lingers to this day, reinforcing a gender dichotomy as well as diminishing female sexuality and individualism. Having lived in Korea and Singapore, Son utilises Singlish (Singaporean-English) slang and phonetically translated Korean in English sentences to create colourful expressions that criticize the lingering residues of the female oppression. Son welcomes viewers to touch the banner and utilize these unique expressions into their everyday conversation. She can be glorious or terrible, benevolent or filled with wrath, but she commands love either way. I am convinced that this is the greatest power in the universe.”– N.K. Jemisin, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (2010) Mothers, most of us have them in some way or another, but we don’t often think about what a Mother is or can be. Mothers can be human or they can be an idea, a feeling, a shadow that follows us, desires from within or presences that make the hair stand up on your arm. This exhibition doesn’t define a mother by the usual definitions, “a woman in relation to her child or children, to bring up a child with care and affection” or “give birth to”. We are exploring the effect of the essential force of the “mother” whether it is indeed the person we relate or disassociate with, the animate or inanimate and how it impacts our lives. The world that we saw through these lenses was affected. It was peculiar to see my friends and teachers moving around with purple bodies that glitched across a spectrum of red and blue. Years later, I moved from Korea to Singapore, then to Australia. The experiences of meeting people from other cultures recalled the experience of my childhood. I realized that my view of other cultures has always been filtered through Korean coloured lenses, and the vision of the world that I once thought ‘normal’ was not everything. In this 21st century globalized world, migrations, advanced technologies and the Internet have blurred the boundaries between cultures and races. In this vague realm, people have become hybrids characterized by multicultural identities that are not bounded by one specific culture.”Let us all combine, Majulah Moogoonghwa Fair (2018) is series of cellophane banners that explore what it means to be a contemporary cultural hybrid in the 21st century globalized world, and to locate meaning in an indeterminate sense of belonging through a poetic approach. Son engages her different cultural memories and experiences by forming sentences that involve fragments of phonetically translated Korean words, Australian and Singaporean slangs. These texts may result in mistranslation as they may have dual meanings in different cultures; but such mistranslation and grammatical errors illustrate Son's senses of belonging to these cultures are neither definite nor indefinite. The combined imageries from these cultures further demonstrate that Son's identity do not tie in with one specific culture, but exists on the borderlines of these unique cultures. These texts and images make up series of delicate cellophane banners that act as Son's coloured lenses that allow her to restlessly question her identity. ------------- Let us all combine, Majulah Moogoonghwa Fair (2018) was part of a group exhibition, “The Depth of Simplicity”, curated by Pimpisa Tinpalit as part of Mapping Melbourne Festival: ’The Depth of Simplicity’ presents the works of four contemporary artists based in Melbourne; Annette Chang, Ellen Yeong Gyeong Son, Supina Bytol and Pimpisa Tinpalit. The artworks in this exhibition are inspired by the artists’ life experiences. Utilizing different techniques and mediums, each artist involves themselves deeply in the project by imprinting their own feelings and thoughts and expressing them through visual presentation. ‘The Depth of Simplicity’ is presented in a partnership with the SpAce@Collins to promote high calibre Contemporary Asian art in Victoria. (2018) explores Son’s identity as ‘culture unspecified’ that ponders between Australian, Korean and Singaporean cultures and communites. The act of scratching and sewing on cellophanes are Son’s method of inscribing, erasing, layering and censoring the borderlines of these unique cultures that often do not intersect with one another. Son engages her different cultural memories and experiences by forming sentences that involve fragments of phonetically translated Korean words, Australian and Singaporean slangs. The texts and images make up series of delicate cellophane banners that act as Son’s coloured lenses that allows her to restlessly question her identity and to look out for new cultures that she hasn’t yet explored. Audience are encouraged to read out these texts to explore Son’s extraterritorial sense of belonging within the unspecified zones of these cultures. ------------- Uncle, Auntie, Mate, 나는? (2018) was part of a group exhibition, “Coliding Borders: Multiple Senses of Belonging”, curated by Kelly Yoon as part of Fringe Festival 2018: Exploring sociocultural diversity in identities to find a true personal sense of self In this multimedia exhibition, artists explore the sociocultural diversity in identities on their journey to find a true sense of self as 21st century global citizen. Identities like nationality or ethnicity are instantly given or assigned to a person at birth. However, identities form beyond these traditional definitions as individuals grow and develop a sense of belonging to multiple cultures and communities. The exhibition extends the new narratives of social, cultural and sexual diversity across the three venues: Sam Merrifield Library, Niddrie Library, and Flemington Library. The artists are challenged to work within community spaces outside the white-cube gallery, and to directly interact with the audiences.
